The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a stretch of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the city. A similar sludge has also been documented on sections of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Examples have been taken and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A spokesperson stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in nutrients, warmth, rain or light".

"The events are occasionally called crimson or rosy tides because the proliferations can change the water reddish," the representative said. "Not all algal blooms are harmful, with many species acting as a key source of energy for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The usual source of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."
