Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
